We're out in South Lyon making solid progress on a patio installation - and this is the phase most people never see. Before a single paver goes down, we're deep in excavation and base prep. This is the work that determines whether a patio lasts five years or fifty.

Here's the thing about clay-heavy soils - water doesn't move through them. It sits, it builds pressure, and it slowly works against everything built above it. We see it constantly in Michigan. So on this job, we're installing a French drain system directly beneath the patio footprint to intercept that water and move it away before it ever becomes a problem.

The French drain runs perforated pipe wrapped in filter fabric, set in clean gravel. That combination pulls water down and out, keeping the base material stable and the surface above it level. Without it on a site like this, you're looking at settling, heaving, and cracked pavers down the road. With it, the patio performs the way it's supposed to - season after season.

A lot of contractors skip this step. It adds time and material cost, and the homeowner doesn't see it when the job is done. But that's exactly the point. We'd rather do it right underground than have a callback two winters from now.

The base is still going in, and there's a lot more to come on this one. The groundwork is never glamorous, but it's everything.
