We're out in Bloomfield Hills working on a gunite pool build that's going to be something special when it's all said and done. Right now we're in the coping phase - setting the stone cap that runs the full perimeter of the pool shell. It's one of those steps that doesn't get enough credit, but it matters a lot.
Coping is the finishing edge between the pool structure and the surrounding deck. Get it wrong and you end up with water infiltration, uneven surfaces, and a look that doesn't hold up over time. Get it right and you've got a clean, solid transition that anchors the whole design. We take our time here.
The gunite shell is fully formed with built-in steps on one end - a great layout for a pool this size. Our crew is fitting and setting each coping piece by hand, making sure the joints line up and the levelness is dialed in before anything gets locked into place. The grading work around the pool is also well underway, shaping the surrounding yard to handle drainage properly once the deck and landscaping go in.
That grading step is easy to overlook when you're focused on the pool itself, but it's critical. If the ground around a pool isn't graded correctly, you get runoff heading toward the shell instead of away from it. We make sure that's handled right from the start so the finished yard functions as well as it looks.
This one's going to be a great outdoor space. The home itself is a newer build with a clean, modern look - the pool is going to match that energy perfectly once the deck, water, and finishes are all in.
