Paver Patio With Retaining Walls and Outdoor Lighting in South Lyon

A lot of backyards in South Lyon are just - unused. Flat grass, no real place to sit, nothing pulling you outside after dinner. That's exactly what we were working with here before we got started.

We installed a large paver patio using a mix of oversized field pavers with a darker contrasting border. The layout gives the space a clean, polished look without feeling overdone. We also built a raised section using a stacked retaining wall, which does two things - it creates a defined seating area and adds some real visual structure to what was otherwise a flat yard. A linear channel drain runs through the lower section to handle water the right way, so pooling isn't something this homeowner will ever have to worry about.

The wall also includes built-in downlighting, and that's where this space really comes to life at night. When the sun goes down, those lights cast a warm glow across the grass and make the whole patio feel intentional. It's the kind of detail that turns a nice patio into a space people actually want to spend time in after dark.

We rounded out the build with a knee wall near the house that adds a planter-style feature and a natural backdrop for outdoor furniture. The whole thing ties together well - daytime or nighttime, this backyard feels completely different than where it started.
